This release ["Wake/Lift"] is more of a social commentary on my first year teaching, and the kids whose lives I've seen destroyed by poor parenting. I seriously believe people should legally need to have a dog for three years before having a child. I've seen my knuckles turn white at some of the things parents do and say to their kids in the name of guilt, denial, power, and neglect.

Honestly, I think Tool is setting a great example for musicians and for fans of music.  They go against every single rule, they go against all the odds.  They have eight-minute videos, they have barely any press.  They do all the wrong things, and are still a huge, huge band that plays really good music and is appreciated by a lot of different people.  I think it’s inspiring, especially for a band like us, doing the type of music that we do.

We basically assembled a crew of people to work on the video that were friends of ours or one degree of separation removed with people we’ve been friends with for years. Which is sort of the M.O. of our band; working with creative and talented people that were familiar with already.

I’ve been both an musician and artist as long as I can remember. We were able from the very beginning to craft a visual representation of our band that fell very much in line and was integral to the sound as well. We’ve worked very hard since day one to keep that intact. Keep all the art and visual stuff surrounding our band within the band. It comes from the band, it is ideas from the band. It’s all very personal with us.
